This place was a super-duper positive choice to relax away from home. It is simply amazing. We enjoyed our Hanok stay so much. Thanks to wholehearted landlords, grateful to them.

It was nice getaway. The owner is so kind. On our last day, he helped us with the taxi.

My boyfriend and I stayed here on a Thursday night (and did the moon boat the same night). The house is owned by a couple. We booked the cheapest room but before we arrived we called the lady owner and she very kindly told us she upgraded our room to one with real fire ondol heating and a TV. She also offered to pick us up in her car, but we chose to take to bus. (N.B. they only speak Korean). We arrived at night and her husband greeted us and showed us the room (we didn't meet the lady that night). He asked us if we were planning to share a room, we said yes. He asked if we were married, we said no but we are living together. He told us that he doesn't let unmarried couples share a room, but he will make an exception just this time since I am from abroad and we are living together anyway, and he warned us to be quiet since sound travels in the house. I couldn't find any information about the marriage rule anywhere online. The room was just warm enough thanks to the ondol. The rooms without ondol would have been like camping. The bathroom was in a separate wing of the house and you have to walk outside to use it but it was clean and private. They provide towels and toiletries. One thing to note is that the step up from outside to inside is very tall so you have to be quite agile to be able to take a big step up whilst taking your shoes off and not leaning on the ancient doors. Also, the doors cannot be locked. In the morning when we woke up, the lady greeted us with tea, apples and snacks. She was very kind and welcoming. She told us a little about the house and even took us into her private residence to show us the ondol and the cat she rescued. I asked her if there are any ghosts in the house and she said a long time ago when the house was first built there was a goblin but I was exorcised and now there are only humans loving there, no ghosts. I actually felt very safe and comfortable sleeping there. The house rules say you need to be back by 11pm and wake up at 7am, but she told us to just take our time and leave whenever. From around 8am visitors may come to see the house. The moon boat was fun. You can tell them you booked through gyeongbuk tours. It costs 4,500 in a taxi to get there from Imcheonggak or about 30 minutes walking. It may be cold because of the river, but the moon boat place provides blankets. Since we went on a Thursday there was barely anyone there. Finally, when you search directions on naver maps, the times given in Andong are very inaccurate. Naver maps said it would take 50 minutes from the train station to Imcheonggak, but in reality it took less than 30. It took just under an hour to go all the way from Imcheonggak to Hahoe village by bus.

This country estate is magnificent and the caretakers are such gentle, kind people. Accidentally arrived early and they rushed over to meet me. Such a peaceful, historic estate. The many houses and courtyards are gorgeous. And on a cold night, sleeping on heated clay floor with the faint scent of wood smoke was incredible. And Andong beef galbi and braised chicken at the restaurants they recommended were absolutely delicious. If you want to get outside of Seoul and see both gorgeous mountains and wide rivers, Andong is the place to see Korea’s gorgeous, painful past. There is a beautiful 500 year old Confucian academy high in the mountains, next to a wide river. And the bridge in town with the pavilion in the middle is stunning at night. Highly recommend.

I had the wonderful opportunity to visit these places on October 10-11. We first decided to go do the Andong Moon Boat. We planned to go during the night after the sunset because the lights on the bridge seemed more bright. We went to check in at around 6:30pm and they said that we had to wait until 9:10pm! This was on a Sunday so if you go on the weekend, be prepared to check in before your planned time because there are so many people! But the boat itself was very fun and the view beautiful. You can also connect your music by bluetooth so you can listen to your favorite music while riding! There is a timer for 25 minutes and after that time, you have to drive back to the dock. After the Moon Boat, we headed to Imcheonggak for our stay. We called in an hour ahead to let them know we were coming (the landlady does not know English). When we arrived, she kindly showed us the bathrooms and our living space. The living space was comfortable and simple for two people. There is no fan/air conditioning/heater, there is just Ondol (heated floors) and small window. The rooms have no locks (just an outer wooden door and an inner sliding door) and the walls are very thin so you cant speak loudly. Also, you are sleeping on the floor with minimal padding and the pillow is made from a hard beaded material with a comforter as a blanket so it might be uncomfortable for some… i only managed to sleep 3-4 hours that night. For me, the most uncomfortable part was the bathrooms. There are no bathrooms connected to the room itself so you have to walk 10 seconds as they are located outside. It was raining that night so it was a little uncomfortable (and a bit scary?) to walk outside at 3-4 am. Also, there are a total of 3 bathroom doors. The landlady said that if one is being used, you can use the other ones (but as i found out, thats not the case). We booked the Haengrangchae room (which there are three rooms in total next to each other as seen in the last photo). One of those three bathrooms is to be shared among ALL the people booked for the Haengrangchae rooms (total 6 people). The other two bathrooms are for the Duitbang and Araetbang Rooms. There was actual a little argument among the visitors about the bathrooms after i accidentally used another of the bathrooms. If the bathroom for your room is being used, you have to wait and walk back to your room. There is no hairdryer available and only two small towels were offered. I think it would be better to bring your own soap, toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo, etc. There was shampoo in the bathroom but no body soap. There is an optional breakfast offered for 7500 won at 8am, which was a very simple meal of side dishes. The taste was okay but the portion sizes were quite small. The landlord also explained cultural aspects of eating meals (in korean). Overall, considering the price of the package, it was well worth it. If you are looking for the cultural experience, then i strongly recommend it ! But if you are expecting comfort, then maybe staying at Imcheonggak would be a little uncomfortable!

If you are looking for the cultural experience, then i strongly recommend it ! But if you are expecting comfort, then maybe staying at Imcheonggak would be a little uncomfortable!
