I really had a fun time learning about gold foil application in Korea. My teacher was very knowledgeable and very patient. He spent a lot of time not only talking about how to apply the foil, but also about the designs and their meanings. He also spent time talking about the history of gold foil in Southeast Asia and the differences between how the cultures apply it. He took me through and explain to detail the meanings of how the cold foil is applied and what the meaning script together mean and the basis of Korean design. This class was so rich, I got so much back to take back and teach my students.

Overview

A very special chance to experience the gold leaf gilding applications at 'Kumbakyeon,' a 5th generation old traditional gold leaf workshop center owned by the royal gold leaf gilders.

Gold has been a symbol of eternity, beauty and authority since ancient times. Generally, in China, Japan and Europe, the gilding technique is used for architecture. However, distinctively in Korea, there have been many advances in the gilding process on the silk with a woodblock imprinting technique. This technique has been applied to making clothes since ancient times.

You will have an exclusive chance to make your own bookmark and greeting card utilizing the Korean traditional gold leaf gilding technique used since Joseon Dynasty. Create a variety of gold leaf patterns with woodblocks made by the masters and natural glue made of pine tree.
