The facts

King Sejong, the 4th king of the Joseon Dynasty (1397-1450, reigning from 1418-1450) was responsible for some of the most brilliant achievements in the history of Korea, including the creation of Hangeul (Korean alphabet) and great advancements in the areas of science, culture, art and politics. The passage behind the Statue of King Sejong in Gwanghwamun Square is home to The Story of King Sejong Exhibition Hall, which describes some of the king’s most astounding contributions to the development of Korea as a nation.

Sejong Museum located at Gwanghwamun Square details the story of not only King Sejong, but Admiral Yi as well. The museum has both artifacts, as well as replicas of various things, including but not limited to, the ancient rocket launcher as well as the sundial and Joseon-dynasty swords.

There are also photo taking opportunities such as the replica of the King's throne, as well as the replica of the famed turtle ship used by Admiral Yi. Aside from these, there are also screening opportunities detailing life in Joseon.

The museum also has a souvenir store, various restaurants, as well as a hands-on calligraphy section completely for free! The service staff are well versed in English to guide visitors in making a calligraphy masterpiece.

Photography is allowed at this place, so snap away!

*General Information
For the convenience and entertainment of visitors, the museum also has a special exhibition room, the King Sejong Multimedia Room, books, a souvenir shop, and a lounge.

The Exhibition Hall’s relatively new ‘Cia-Cia Hangeul Story Hall’ (opened in Feb. 12, 2010) gives visitors an even better chance to see the far-reaching effects of Sejong’s efforts. The Cia-Cia tribe in Indonesia, in lieu of having its own writing system, adopted Hangeul as their official written language.

The Story of King Sejong Exhibition Hall is linked to the KT building on the left and the Sejong Center for Performing Arts on the right through an easily-accessible underground passageway.

The story of King Sejong is a great place to learn more about King Sejong and his contribution to Korea! I first chanced upon his name in the history books, and later, while learning Hangul. However, this museum would show his all-rounded contributions which goes far beyond his invention of the Hangul system.

The place is unexpectedly quite big. You can learn about King Sejong and hangeul here. The entrance is just right at the back of King Sejong statue in Gwanghwamun Plaza. No entrance fee. Some collection are not equipped with english description
