Mapo Bridge is one of the spots where Psy's "Gentleman" music video was taken. It's easy to get there and you can walk by the road where it has a magnificent view of Han River and Seoul.
The bridge connects Yonggang-dong, Mapo-gu and Yeouido-dong (Yeongdeungpo-gu) and is 1,400m long and 25m wide (6-lane road).
The construction of the bridge first started in February of 1968 and was completed in May of 1970. At the time of its completion the bridge was named “Seoul Bridge,” which was later changed to “Mapo Bridge” in 1984.
The bridge was the fourth bridge to be built over the Hangang River following the construction of Hannam Bridge.
In 2012, Samsung Life Insurance & Seoul Metropolitan Government initiated "Bridge of Life" campaign in Mapo Bridge to prevent suicide as Mapo Bridge is one "famous" suicide spot in South Korea. Words of encouragement, simple greeting, and jokes are written on the guard rail trying to communicate with the passersby. Photos that reminded people with their family, friends, and loved ones are shown. LED light that reacted to the people as they walk by and statue of 2 friends were also installed.
