The facts

Located in the northern Jeju, Halmang Bing Dduck is the most famous Bing Dduck (rice cake) street vendor. Halmang, which is a Jeju dialect, means Grandmother. This street vendor is really operated by a grandmother. She makes food in a traditional way. And in the making process, Bing Dduck is gyrated in the pan. So in mimetic word, Jeju's ancestors expressed this gyration as 'bing~bing~' in Korean. That's why the food is named Bing Dduck.
Bing Dduck's main ingredients are buckwheat and white radish.

There is one story about the buckwheat. 700 years ago, there was Sambyeolcho (a Goryeo's special capital defense unit) Rebellion. When Sambyeolcho fought with Mongolia, Jeju's ancestors helped Sambyeolcho. So Mongolia was unhappy with Jeju people and gave the buckwheat seed to Jeju's ancestors because Mongolia thought the buckwheat was toxic. But in real, the buckwheat has a lot of minerals so it’s difficult to digest and Jeju ancestors mixed it with white radish, making it digestible. And Mongolia was surprised by this. Actually it was rather to be help a dire situation where there weren't enough food in Jeju. You can see the ancestor's wisdom in the food and that’s why the food is meaningful. Although Bing Dduck's tastes bland, it's valuable to eat.
