Byeolbangjin 별방진

Byeolbangjin fortress was constructed by Jeju governor Jang Lim during the Joseon Dynasty. It's 2,390 feet (cheok) in circumference and 7 feet (cheok) high. It was built to defend the island from the attacks of Japanese in the 5th year of king Jungjong of the Joseon dynasty. It is told that people who worked for the construction was starved since the poor harvest of the year. Designated as the Local Monument number 24. the fortress made by the residents shows people's will and difficulties to protect themselves from Japanese invasion.
