Commission Agency Site of Kim Man-duk, located near Passenger Terminals in Jeju city, is a mini-sized folk village. The site consists of 8 traditional style buildings with straw-thatched roofs. Some of the buildings feature a small exhibition about how people in Jeju Island lived in the past. The other side of the buildings is an inn, built based on the historical resources to look authentic. You can take a seat either inside or outside the inn to actually try Jeju's tasty local dishes.
[About Kim Man-duk] Kim Man-duk (1739~1812) was a female business magnate during the Joseon Dynasty. She ran an inn where travelers and merchants could exchange goods from Jeju Island and the mainland, and became highly successful making a lot of money.
When people in Jeju Island suffered from terrible harvests in 1794, she spent all of her property to purchase grains to save them from starving. Acknowledging her humanitarian contribution for the locals, King Jeongjo bestowed an honorary position in medicine on her, which was the highest position females could get back then. She was also given an opportunity to go sightseeing at Mt. Geumgangsan, located in North Korea, which was an impossible idea for females during the Dynasty.
