Wat Phra Mongkhon Bophit is one of the currently active Thai temples in former Ayutthaya which has an immense cultural and historical value for Thailand. Housing a 12.45 meter tall bronze statue of Buddha, the temple is visited by thousands of tourists as well as worshipers daily. The exact background of the bronze image is unknown. However, according to recorded writings, King Songtham had ordered the image to be moved from the east of the Grand Palace to the west and placed a canopy over the statue. Today, it is called the 'Luang Poh Mongkhon Bophit' and is regarded one of the most sacred symbols by all people of Ayutthaya.
