Wat Suwan Dararam, which is also known as Golden Temple, had been founded in late Ayutthaya period by King Wat Thong and named by King Rama 1 who is a son of King Wat Thong. It had been rebuilt in 1785 after completely destroyed by the Burmese and renovated by descendants of King Wat Thong from King Rama 1 to King Rama 7 for over hundreds of years.
There are less record and history passed down about Wat Suwan Dararam compared with the other structures in Ayutthaya. However, it is definitely sure that this temple is the best to enjoy the story of past Ayutthaya period by looking at a number of murals.
Ubosot, which is an ordination hall, has the boat-shaped line which was the typical style in late Ayutthaya period. This symbolizes a means of reaching nirvana. There are well-detailed murals and bizarre Jatakas but the well-known one is about Buddha's struggle against Mara while obtaining enlightenment. The vihara contains murals portraying the story of King Naresuan the Great doing battle on the back of elephant against the Burmese. Bell-shaped chedis all painted white give you feeling of sacred.
