The facts

Wat Mahathat - also called Wat Phra Maha That - has been an epicenter of Ayutthaya city since the 14th century.

The temple is famous for having an enormous amount of relics inside. The principal Prang in this temple is believed that it would be the very first Prang built in Ayutthaya period. When the principal Prang had been restored, a stone casket was discovered which contained not only Buddha's relics but also silver, gold, garnet and more invaluable antiques.

A fascinating reason why you shouldn't miss this place is that it bears one of the most prominent landmarks of Ayutthaya - the Head of Buddha embedded in a tree. It has come down for a quite long time that Buddha's head cut by invader was entrapped by the roots of a Banyan tree and entwined.

Imagine the previous looks of Wat Mahathat which must have seemed splendid before it was destroyed and have an eye contact with Buddha's head in a modest way - crouching down!

Caution! When you would like to take a picture with the head of Buddha, make sure your head isn't higher than the Buddha's head to be respectful.
