The facts

Hwacheon Sancheoneo Ice Festival has become a major winter festival in Korea. CNN International chose the festival as one of the "Seven Wonders of Winter."

Sancheoneo (mount trout) live in the cold and fresh stream in Hwacheon, Gangwon province. The river completely freezes in winter so visitors and locals can roam all over it.

At the festival, you can carve out a whole in the ice and try fishing for Sancheneo. There are many more events to enjoy besides ice fishing. Visitors can try ice skating, snowmobile riding and ice sledding. Also there is a huge-scale ice sculpture exhibition. In additional cost, you can have your catch grilled or fillet them to serve as sliced raw fish at the festival.

The site also depicts a perfect Korean winter scenery. Particularly, the natural view on the bridge is quite splendid. You can enjoy with both of your family and a group of friends. It's a must-participate event in Korea during the winter time.

We went there on a weekday late morning, with the main aim of doing some ice fishing.
There was not much of a crowd at the area reserved for tourists (Where there's a limit of catching only 3 fishes per person); but the locals area at the other end of the stream was SUPER crowded!

This is a nice place to hangout with friends but for only about half a day, as all activities do cost extra.
Nonetheless, my friends and I did enjoy the ice fishing tremendously~
