Would recommend this tour to anyone who wants to experience a different side of South Korea. At Yeongyang, the air is definitely fresher, more crisp, and with an abundance of greenery. The ride from Busan to Yeongyang took around 3 hours with a rest stop in between (snack time!). Our tour guide, Mr Dony, supplements nuggets of information of the Korean landscape, history and culture along the drive. We had ample time to tour around each of the attraction points, which we even did a little hike up (Mt.) Ilwolsan. Besides the nature, we were also exposed to the history and significance of chill peppers to Yeongyang through one of its exhibition halls, which were interesting to learn about. Finally, we visited Doodle Village, a beautiful hanok village that is still very well maintained until now. Arguably the highlight of the tour, lunch was served with a table full of food and side dishes. The vegetables were sourced from the mountains (hence 산채정식), and it was intriguing to experience the difference in tastes and textures. Overall, this felt like a ‘healing’ trip. We were so well-taken care of throughout the entire time, thanks to Dony and his team’s efforts in making sure we’re comfortable all the time.

Going on this trip was amazing, I was able to get out of the bustling city and experience the tranquil and the beautiful scenery that Yeongyang offered. Mr. Dony was a great tour guide and told us the history of the city of Seonbawi Cliff, Ilwolsan Flower Park, and lastly Doodle Village. The city of Yeongyang is known for it's chili (고주) so it was cute to see chili mascots and chili displayed pretty much everywhere. Our first location was the beautiful Seonbawi Rock. I think it knew we were coming because there was an unexpected yet beautiful waterfall that started as soon as we arrived. There is also a greenhouse and a chili museum on site that displayed beautiful greenery. I didn't know that chili was exported from Japan to Korea which is why now the kimchi's are red. Our lunch was also located at the restaurant that was right next to the rock. The restaurant was amazing, there was plenty of side dishes to try from kimchi (of course) to the vegetables that they grow on the mountainside. After lunch, we headed to the Ilwolsan Flower Park where there is a mine that was constructed during the Japanese colonial period to mine for gold, silver, and bronze. The mine is now abandoned, and is transformed into a park that many can relax and enjoy the view of the mountain and the crisp air, and even hike up a staircase to the top of the mine. Our last stop was Doodle Hanok Village which is a small countryside located in Northern Yeongyang. It came to us as a surprise that they were having an event when we arrived so it felt almost like a welcoming gift! The area is quite small and cozy and again, the views are amazing. I would like to thank Mr. Dony for being an amazing tour guide and making us all feel comfortable and relaxed during our trip around the beautiful city of Yeongyang. Thank you for sharing the beautiful history and stories and views that Yeongyang can offer!

This tour took me to the Seonbawi rock 선바위 and Namipo 남이포 riverside place in Ibam 입암, it's the legendary place of General Nami 남이. The story of this rock is that General Nami himself used a gigantic knife and sliced this rock into the shape that it is today. There's also the Yeongyang Bonsai, Suiseki, and Wild Flower Themed Park right near the rock and it houses about 200 bonsais, 50 suisekis.  The city of Yeongyang is known for their  Red Peppers and there's a Promotion Exhibition Hall located nearby as well. During our stop, we were served a very traditional Korean meal and I really enjoyed the experience. At our next stop we learned about Mt. Ilwol, which was once used to smelt gold, silver, bronze and zinc by the Japanese. YeongYang Doodle Village (영양 두들마을) was our last stop and we walked around the village where some people still live. Doodle Village's name means ‘village on a hill’ in Korean. It was very  nice to see and hear the history of the hanoks.

Overview

Take in all the picturesque landscapes in Yeongyang county of Gyeongbuk, and learn how the mountain villagers lived in the past.

Seonbawi Rock & Namipo River
Seonbawi Rock resembles a giant candlestick at first glance, standing upright between steep cliffs. Namipo is where the two streams flowing along Seonbawi Rock and the stone walls meet, named after Nami General. These two create an ultimate jaw-dropping scenic beauty.

Mt. Ilwolsan Wild Flower Park
64 different kinds of wild plants have been planted in the park which used to be a smelting factory during the Japanese colonial days. The blooming flowers and the mountainous landscape on the background make it perfect for a memorable picture.

Yeongyang Doodle Village
Meaning village on a hill in Korean, Doodle Village was built by Lee Si-myeong whose pen name is Seokgye, as an escape from the 2nd Manchu invasion in Korea. You can also check the first woman-written food recipe cookbook in East Asia called 'Eumsik Dimibang' written by Jang Gye-hyang, the wife of Seokgye at the village.
