The facts

Geomunoreum (456m above sea level) in Jeju refers to the oreum (Jeju dialect for ‘small volcano’) located right next to Hamdeok Elementary School, Jocheon-eup, Jeju. It's named so as it looks black (geomun) with its thick forest.

The oreum was formed between 300,000 and 100,000 years ago when lava from volcanic activity meandered along the northeastern coastal slopes and sculpted the unique landscape of Seonheulgot. The lava also created a series of unique caves (also known as ‘lava tubes’) including Bengdwigul, Manjanggul, Gimnyeonggul, Yongcheondonggul, and Dangcheomuldonggul.

Upon arrival at Geomunoreum, visitors are greeted by a breath-taking array of foliage included cedars, pines, bushes and shrubs, and broad-leaved evergreens. The forest is also home to a variety of migratory birds such as the Brown-Eared Bulbul, the Korean Bush Warbler, the Varied Tit, the Oriental Turtle-dove, the White-Backed Woodpecker, the Fairy Pitta, and the Tricolor Flycatcher.

Following Geomunoreum’s designation as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage in 2007, a trekking course was developed to accommodate the increased number of Korean and international tourists. The tour course is offered every half an hour, between 9 a.m. and 12 p.m. except for Tuesdays. Visitors must make reservations prior to visiting Geomunoreum.
