Located in southern Phuket between Chalong and Kata, the 45-meter statue of Big Buddha stands tall and proud. Sitting on top of the Nakkerd Hills, Big Buddha can be seen from almost anywhere in southern Phuket. From up here you can see all of three major bays: Chalong Bay, Kata Bay, Karon Bay, and maybe even Phang Nga Bay if you’re lucky!
Formally referred to by the grand name of Phra Puttamingmongkol Akenakkiri Buddha, Big Buddha is 45 meters tall and 25 meters wide. The Buddha is covered in Burmese white jade marbles, which add to the statue's remarkable beauty. Sitting next to the white Big Buddha is another, smaller Buddha made up of 22 tons of brass. These two exquisite Buddhas were dedicated to the late King Bhumibol for this 80th birthday and Queen Sirikit respectively, with the white Big Buddha first being constructed in 2004.
Indeed, Big Buddha is one of the most important and admired landmarks in Phuket. It embodies the Thai culture and history along with symbolism for their beloved leaders. Therefore, it is important to dress with respect.
