Situated around Sop Ruak, the Golden Triangle is one of the most visited places in northern Thailand. At the center of the Golden Triangle, the Ruak river joins with the Mekong river to create a natural border between the countries of Myanmar, Laos, and Thailand.
The Golden Triangle is famous for its significant connection to the history of opium production and drug trading. The untouched land of the Golden Triangle composed of endless poppy fields, which then served as a primary drug trading locale. It is said that the term "Golden Triangle" came from the fact that the three countries that border around this area used gold as a trading currency.
