Wat Phra That is a holy temple located on the hillside on Doi Suthep (Mountain Suthep) in the northwest of Chiang Mai. It is about 15km away from central area of Chiang Mai, and it takes about 30 minutes one-way by car. At this temple, there is a viewpoint where visitors can overlook the nearby areas including Chiang Mai.
There are about 300 steps decorated with Phaya Naga, a mythical creature that resembles a serpent. At the temple, there is a golden chedi, golden statues of Buddha, an Emerald Buddha and a statue of a Hindu god Ganesh. There are also bells that are believed to bring good luck.
According to a myth, a white elephant carried a relic of Buddha to Doi Suthep, so there is a big statue of the white elephant inside the temple.
To visit the temple, visitors are required to cover the knee and shoulder and take off shoes at some places.
