The facts

Wat Chedi Luang is a Buddhist temple inside the old city wall close to Tha Phae Gate in Chiang Mai. Although it was ruined due to an earthquake, the remains are still something worth seeing!

Wat Chedi Luang is most famous for the massive chedi or pagoda that once stood in the center of the temple. Before it crumbled down during the earthquake, it was the tallest chedi/pagoda in Chiang Mai, standing at 80 meters high! Local people believed that the chedi protected the city and considered it sacred.

The government made efforts to restore the whole temple, however, they only managed to restore the lower base of the temple. The restored water serpents at the bottom of the temple stairs are well restored and perfect photo zone.

Even though half of the chedi is ruined, you can still get a glimpse of how big the chedi was, just by looking at the base.

Visit the temple and learn about all the stories connected to the majestic chedi!
