Abai Village is a small village in Sokcho City, located on the East Coast of Gangwon Province, where elderly people who fled from North Korea during the Korean War came and settled. Famous for its nostalgic atmosphere, if you ever want to know how Seoul looked like in the 1970’s this is the place to come.
Abai Village is very well known for its signature Abai Sundae. Sundae, pronounced “soon dae”, is a traditional Korean sausage where ground meats and vegetables are stuffed inside pig intestines then steam cooked.
However, the Abai Sundae is unique. The stuffing is packed inside the body of a squid. Chewy and packed with tons of flavor, it is a food only unique to Korea, therefore you must try!
Don’t forget to ride the famous Abai Village Ferry. This raft-like platform boat, called “gaetbae” in Korean, takes you across the water that separates the village from the mainland and you can visit the famous Sokcho Tourist & Fishery Market where you can taste delicious local foods.
The boat is connected to a cable that runs across both sides of the land. The boat floats across the water by pulling on the cable. Only a 5-minute ride, you must volunteer to pull on the cable and become the captain of the boat!
The village was also the shooting spot for the famous K-drama, “Autumn In My Heart”. Come see the exact shooting spot for yourself and reenact your favorite scenes. You will surely have a recollection of your beautiful past!
