The facts

Founded in 544 C.E., Hwaeomsa Temple is a Buddhist temple located on Jirisan Mountain in the Jeollanam-do Province. As one of the 10 most famous temples in Korea, this temple is a must-visit temple for those who want to relax their minds in the quiet temple and learn about the historic national cultural heritages.

Famous for its many national cultural heritages, enter the main gate and walk to the peaceful Gakhwangjeon Hall, which is named the National Cultural Heritage No. 67. Gakhwangjeon Hall is the largest Buddha Hall made of stone in Korea. Come learn about the legend of how a poor woman was reborn as a princess and built this hall as an offering. Relax your mind in this majestic hall and enlighten yourself through meditation.

After relaxing your mind, head to the back of the hall to see the Four Lion Three-Story Stone Pagoda which is named the National Cultural Heritage No. 35. The marvelous three-story stone monument built on top of four lions will have you marvel and wonder how skilled the builders were at that time.

Don’t forget to head up to Gucheungam, the highest point of the temple. When you reach the end of the stairs towards Gucheungam, turn around and see the breathtaking view of the temple and Jirisan Mountain. Capture the spectacular nature with your eyes and take pictures to share with your family and friends!
