Taekwondo (a Korean martial art with a heavy emphasis on kicks) is the world famous martial arts today but it wasn’t well organized until recently. There were too many different styles and rules. So in 1978, Kukkiwon, the headquarters of Taekwondo, integrated 10 major gyms and successfully unified them. Due to the effort, you can see the world championships and various national competitions of Taekwondo in Kukkiwon. They offer many experience programs for foreigners including the basic stance of Taekwondo, the art of self-defense and the art of wood-breaking. If you are interested, make a reservation one day in advance. They also present a promotional Taekwondo demonstration performance every day at 5 pm. If you are martial arts lover, it’s an interesting place to visit because it’s not just for the sightseeing but you can actually participate in the programs.
