Information

The facts

The Jeju April 3 Incident was a series of events in which thousands of islanders were killed as a result of clashes between armed civilian groups and government forces. Between 30,000 and 80,000 people (10 percent to 25 percent of the Jeju island's population) were executed along with the destruction of many villages from 1948 to 1954. Most of the victim from the massacre were innocent, not related with communism, unlike the dispatched soldiers assumed. Moreover, preemptive apprehension was followed after the break of the Korean Civil War, which led to another massive carnage.

To commemorate the Jeju April 3 Incident, Jeju April 3 Peace Park was established in Jeju city in 2007. It is composed of a memorial tower, an altar, a peace memorial hall, and several sculptures.
