Hongyemun means a gate shaped like rainbow. Its construction was started in 1906 and completed in 1908 by the Japanese military engineers who took in charge of the railroad construction. It was originally called Hyeolmun. At that time the border line between countries were being formed.
This gate was built during the colonization era to support the sharply increasing population of Japanese in Jungang-dong and Gwan-dong regions.
