The facts

"Donnaeko," located in the south of Jeju, near Seogwipo Subtropical Forest Laboratory, is an ice velley where there is no summer. 'Donnaeko' means "an entrance where boars used to drink water," since boars used to appear in this region in the past.

"Donnaeko" always has cold and clean water flowing from Hallasan Mountain. The surrounding scenery is also beautiful. Each side of the valley is covered with temperate zone evergreen forests, and cymbidium orchids and buergeri naturally grow here.

The 'Donnaeko Trail' starts from the Visitors Center (altitude 500m) at the upper parts of 'Donnaeko' recreation grounds in Seogwipo City. It then passes the Sseogeun-multong (stagnant pond), Salchaegido, and the Pyeonggwe Shelter (altitude 1,450m), and then continues up to the south cliff junction (altitude 1,600m). The trail covers 7 km and takes about 3 hours and 30 minutes for a one-way trip. Visitors can follow the south cliff beltway that goes to Witsae-oreum in order to descend via either Eorimok or Youngsil Trails.

A gently sloping trail leads from the Visitors Center to the Pyeonggwe Shelter (altitude 1,450m), and a nearly level road continues up to the south cliff junction (alititude 1,600m), from where one has a great view of Hallasan Mountain's magnificent volcanic craters.

Various plants and trees, representative of different climates, can be seen along the Donnaeko Trail as one ascends vertically.

The rocky areas surrounding the Pyeonggwe Shelter up to the south cliff junction predominantly consist of Hallasan Baengnokdam basaltic rock. Some lava caves and rope structures can be found here, and this is the place with the best views of lava domes made of Hallasan Baengnokdam trachytes.

The Donnaeko Trail does not have any spring water, so visitors must carry enough drinking water with them. Visitors are also advised to travel in groups rather than by themselves since the south cliff junction areas are frequently subject to drastic climatic changes. The Eorimok and Yeongsil Trails lead to the Witsae-oreum Shelter.
