개요

Ang Thong National Marine Park, located on the shores of the Surat Thani Province, was officially established as a national marine park in 1980. It is an archipelago of 42 islands with 40 of them uninhabited. The entire park is 102 square kilometers large while the islands cover only 18 square kilometers. The name of the park means “bowl of gold”.

The major islands of this park include Ko Phaluai, Ko Wua Ta Lap, Ko Mae Ko, Ko Sam Sao, Ko Hin Dap, Ko Nai Phut, and Ko Phai Luak. The Islands are mostly made of rough limestone caves, hills, and boulders that erect at a steep angle. The islands are mainly covered in evergreen forests. Ang Thong National Marine Park is known for its steep limestone and unique scenery. With many shallow coral reefs, it also makes an ideal location for snorkeling.

Ang Thong National Marine Park gained its global notoriety when it appeared in Alex Garland’s novel “The Beach”. Although the movie depiction of the novel starring Leonardo DiCaprio was actually filmed on Phi Phi Islands, Ang Thong National Marine Park still remains its acclaimed reputation amongst tourists.
