概要

Located on the east of Gyeongbokgung Palace, Jongmyo is a Confucian shrine of the Joseon Dynasty that is designated by UNESCO as world cultural assets in 1995. It is where the past kings and their queens of the Joseon Dynasty, who founded the country and endeavored for the best of their people, are enshrined.

Its memorial service 'Jongmyo Jaerye' is said to be the oldest complete ceremony in the world. 'Jongmyo Jaeryeak', the musical part of the ceremony, is performed each year during the Confucian ritual with instruments, songs, and dances that originated over 500 years ago.

* The Grand Ancestral Rite is held once a year, on the first Sunday of May, with Jeryeak, the Royal Ritual Music and Ilmu, the Royal Ritual Dance.

* Performance Times
- Yeongnyeongjeon Jehyang Rituals: 10:00-12:00
- Eoga Haengnyeol (Royal Parade): 11:00-12:00
- Jeongjeon, Gongsindang Jehyang Rituals: 16:00-18:30

Visitors may enter Jongmyo Shrine only in a guided tour group at specific times on weekdays (except Tuesdays) and Sundays. On Saturdays, visitors may enter at their leisure.

- March ~ October: 9 am ~ 6 pm
- November ~ February: 9 am ~ 5:30 pm
* Last admission is until 1 hour before closing time.
* Closed on Tuesdays
