Myeongdong Cathedral, the first Western-style brick building in Korea, was completed in May 1898. It is located at the shopping district of Myeongdong.
Myeongdong Cathedral played an important role as a center of political and labor protests in the 1970s and 1980s (during the period of military governments) and became the mecca of pro-democracy activities.

I usually attend Sunday mass here, every time I visited Seoul. Last Christmas also here, it was 12AM (midnight) mass but really I sat earlier inside a church for more than 2 hours, otherwise you won't get seated inside. It's Christmas and too many people and tourist wants to attend.
Beautiful Church and Architecture. There is a Mother Mary cave both in front of the church and outside in the back, the back side is the best spot to pray.

For being situated in the lively and loud Myeongdong this place is extremly relaxing. It has recently been renovated and is now boasting an even nicer surrounding. So if you happen to be in Myeongdong you should definitely take a walk around its area and enjoy the scenery.

I was first drawn to Myeongdong Cathedral after watching the drama "You're Beautiful". The compound is relatively huge with many western-style architecture. Also, there is a figurine of the martyr of Korea's Catholic movement which makes this place historically significant as well. It would be good to research in advance regarding the timing for mass. I went there when they were having their mass and was thus unable to take pictures of the interior of the compounds.
