Yes, the Higashiyama district is definitely worth visiting, especially if you want to experience traditional Kyoto. The area is known for its well-preserved historic streets, temples like Yasaka Pagoda, and scenic walking routes such as Ichinenzaka, Ninenzaka, and Sannenzaka. It offers a rich cultural atmosphere with shops, tea houses, and beautiful views that make it ideal for strolling and photography. While it can be crowded at peak times, visiting early or later in the day makes the experience more enjoyable.
One of the most photographed streets in Kyoto is the area made up of Ichinenzaka, Ninenzaka, and Sannenzaka in the Higashiyama district. These stone-paved streets feature traditional wooden buildings and a beautifully preserved old-town atmosphere. Their gentle slopes and views toward temples make them especially popular for photography. As a result, they are among the most iconic and frequently captured scenes in Kyoto.
Yasaka Pagoda, also known as Hokanji Temple, is a historic five-story pagoda located in Kyoto’s Higashiyama district. It dates back over a thousand years and is one of the area’s most recognizable landmarks, often seen rising above traditional streets like Ninenzaka. While the pagoda itself is not usually open to the public, it is highly popular for sightseeing and photography. It represents classic Buddhist architecture and adds to the traditional atmosphere of Higashiyama.
Yasaka Shrine is famous for being one of Kyoto’s most important Shinto shrines and for hosting the Gion Matsuri, one of Japan’s most famous festivals, held every July. The shrine is also known for its vibrant vermilion buildings and its location at the eastern end of Gion, Kyoto’s traditional entertainment district. Many visitors come to pray for good health, prosperity, and protection. In the evening, the lantern-lit grounds create a lively and atmospheric setting that attracts both locals and tourists.
Kenninji Temple is the oldest Zen temple in Kyoto and the head temple of the Rinzai school of Zen Buddhism. Founded in 1202, it is located near the Gion district and is known for its peaceful atmosphere and historic significance. The temple features beautiful Zen gardens, traditional architecture, and famous artworks, including a large twin dragon painting on the ceiling of its Dharma Hall.
