Information

概要

Jeonju Hanok Village is located in the city of Jeonju and overlaps Pungnam-dong and Gyo-dong. This village was created by people who gathered together to live, against the Japanese people who wanted to destroy the Jeonju fortress and invade the residential area during the 1930s. There are over 800 traditional Korean 'hanok' houses. While the rest of city has been industrialized, Hanok Maeul retains its historical charms and traditions.
You can leisurely stroll through block upon block of hundreds of elegant wooden Korean homes, many of which have now been converted into guesthouses, museums, galleries, tea houses and street food vendors. You could literally spend the day wandering through the neighborhood's romantic clay wall-lined alleyways, discovering the neighborhood's treasures. Most of Jeonju's Hanok homes were built in the 1920s and 30s like Bukchon Hanok Village in Seoul.
You should also visit Omokdae, which is a small hill overlooking the village. It's a great view from the top to see the village scenery.
Recently, Jeonju Hanok Village is gaining more popularity for various types of creative street food from special home-made dumplings, Grilled Octopus, Cheese & Yogurt Imsil Cheese Stick to the very famous one of Korea's top 5 bakeries PNB Poongnyeon Bakery (opened since 1951)'s Choco Pie.
Many of the Jeonju scenery appeared on several Korean movies including Gwanghae (Masquerade) 2012 starring Lee Byeong Hun, Jeonwoochi 2009 starring Gang Dong Won.
After the day tour at the village, it's also highly recommended to visit the newly renovated Nambu Market where you can find a variety of street food and hand-made items.

*Every last Saturday of the month is Hanbok Day where people wearing Korean traditional clothes Hanbok gather around from day to night.

Nice place to walk around in, especially during evening time when the sun is about to set. I recommend renting a hanbok to wear here as the architecture makes for very good photography backdrop as well.

I enjoyed visiting Jeonju Hanok Village.. the place has a lot of things to offer such as make your own bibimbap, hanbok rental and stroll around the village and enjoy eating variety of food along the street or inside the restaurant.

I went there last spring for university program. Everything was awesome except crowded streets. That street is famous for traditional buildings and many tasty foods. In my opinion Imy favorite one was gilgeoriya. Spicy burger I love it!
