Die Fakten

Located in the ancient Siamese city of Ayutthaya, Wat Chaiwatthanaram is a Buddhist temple which had been deserted for deterioration after the siege of Ayutthaya by the Burmese army in 1767 until it was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991.

Once a beautiful and majestic temple, the Wat Chaiwatthanaram had contained various works of art that portrayed Buddha and many Buddha statues painted in gold and black. Now, despite the loss of its former elegance, the temple is still considered to be one of Thailand’s most important landmarks visited by thousands of tourists each day.
